A very important report from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was released last week. It appeared in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) titled, "Application of Lower Sodium Intake Recommendations to Adults - - - United States, 1999 - 2006"
The full text of the report can be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5811a2.htm
More information from the CDC about consuming less salt can be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/Features/Sodium/#
Essentially the report states that after reviewing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 -2006, the CDC found that in 2005 - 2006, nearly 70% of U.S. adults aged over 20 years or older (approximately 145.5 million persons) met the criteria for the risk groups recommended for lower sodium consumption of less than or equal to1,500 mg/day.
Of the 70% at risk, nearly 31% of adults over 20 years were found to have high blood pressure (hypertension); nearly 35% did not have hypertension but were over 40 years of age, and about 5% did not have hypertension but were black and aged 20 - 39 years.
2 years increased from 3,329 mg in 2001--2002 to 3,436 mg in 2005 - 2006, exceeding in each period even the higher sodium intake limit of 2,300 mg/day recommended in 2005.
